Jason King, a barista for a little over a year, likes going to work each day at the Starbucks location at the Embassy Suites in Chicago because he meets interesting people who are traveling from around the world for business.
“You never know who you’ll meet,” he said. “Former President Bill Clinton, Christian Slater and Mila Kunis have all come in here. I was just telling my mom the two people I really want to meet are David Bowie and Katy Perry.”
Tuesday (8/12/2014) he was behind the bar making handcrafted beverages for Starbucks customers when he saw the name “Katheryn” on a cup.
As he started to prepare a tall soy vanilla latte, he glanced up at the customer and smiled.
She looked familiar.
“Then it clicked and my heart jumped,” he said. “Oh my goodness, don’t freak out I kept telling myself.”
Jason made the Starbucks beverage the same way would for any other customer, this one just happened to be singer, songwriter and actress Katy Perry.
“Katheryn, I have your tall soy vanilla latte,” he called out.
As she approached the bar, he told her, “I know you want to keep a low profile; I know exactly who you are and I think you are amazing and so awesome.”
Perry thanked him for being discreet.
“She told me, ‘I know you’re freaking out and I appreciate you keeping this low profile. I’m just here to do a little shopping,’” Jason recalled. “Then she asked if there’s anything she can do for me.”
Stunned, he said, “Maybe just shake my hand.”
She handed her latte and sandwich to someone she was with, shook his hand, and left.
After pausing for a moment, Jason jumped back to work making beverages for other Starbucks customers.
Later, he said his heart started pounding again when the store manager showed him something Katy Perry posted to her 55 million followers on Twitter
Dear Jason @Starbucks on Ohio and N State in Chicago, you make a mean soy latte
She also referred to being “tripped out” that Starbucks serves wine and beer in select stores. Starbucks Evenings locations are a place for customers to take a moment to unwind in the evenings. At these stores, customers can enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine in a casual atmosphere, complemented by an expanded and shareable evening food menu.
“Every customer is special and deserves the best beverage I can make,” Jason added. “I do have to say it’s amazing to say I’ve made a latte for Katy Perry. I’m still smiling about it.”
