Bill McNichols is senior vice president, Starbucks Corporate Development and Business Alliances. For the last seven years he has overseen global corporate development leading company wide business development, investment and mergers and acquisition activities.
While at Starbucks, Bill has led more than 40 transactions including over $11 billion of acquisitions, divestitures and investments. Among his significant transactions are Starbucks pending $7.2 billion sale to Nestle of a controlling interest in its global consumer packaged goods business (excluding Starbucks ready-to-drink assets), Starbucks recent $1.5 billion acquisition of its remaining 50% interest in its East China joint venture from Uni-President Enterprises and President Chain Store Corp, the $815 million dual-tender to buy in the 60% of Starbucks Japan held between the Sazaby Group and public shareholders, the $384 million sale of Tazo to Unilever, as well as the acquisitions of Teavana, la Boulange, and Evolution Fresh. Bill has also led Starbucks partnerships with Keurig Green Mountain, Chase Manhattan Bank, Tencent (WeChat), and Starbucks ready-to-drink partnership in China with Tingyi-Asahi Beverage, among others. Notable investments for Starbucks include Square, Princi, and Formation.
Prior to joining Starbucks in 2011, Bill spent over five years at Vulcan Capital, the investment vehicle for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, where he was one of two senior professionals with responsibility for a multi-billion dollar private equity portfolio focused on media, technology and telecommunications investments. Notable investments at Vulcan included the restructuring of DreamWorks to form DreamWorks Animation and DreamWorks Studios, the restructuring and sale of Oxygen Media to NBCUniversal, and restructuring and sale of the The Sporting News to Advanced Publications as well as the deployment of over $275 million of new equity capital. Bill began his career at Gleacher & Co. where he spent over six years focused on advisory and investment work in the packaged goods, quick service restaurant and media sectors.
Bill holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.A. with high honors from Colgate University. Bill, his wife Nicole, and their three children live in Seattle. Bill is a Starbucks Coffee Master whose favorite Starbucks beverage is a tall nitro Cold Brew coffee.
