The Starbucks Foundation made Starbucks Shared Planet Youth Action Grants to fifty U.S. nonprofits, totaling $841,500. The grants ranged from $10,000 to $25,000 and support youth to create change in their local communities.
America Scores Atlanta
Writing for the Community, Youth Leaders for Change
America SCORES Atlanta (ASA) engages urban elementary grade students, ages 8-11, with a creative writing program that hires public school teachers to serve as teacher coaches five days per week. The SCORES curricula contains an innovative combination of soccer, writing, creative expression, and service-learning and is designed to combat illiteracy, an issue especially pervasive in Atlanta's low income communities. With teamwork as the unifying value, America SCORES Atlanta inspires youth to be engaged students, life-long readers, and agents of change in their communities. America SCORES has a long history with Starbucks, both on the national and local levels. Locally, partners have supported America SCORES through MYM projects, participation in SCORES Cup and board service for affiliates.
America Scores Bay Area
San Francisco, CA
SCORES Club is a youth leadership development program for 135 middle school students in grades 6-8, who are alumni of SCORES elementary programs. SCORES Club combines soccer, literacy-based service-learning activities, and mentoring. The program will expand from the pilot middle school soccer and service-learning programs for 50 youth by formalizing and growing this much-needed service to an additional 85 participants. The key component of this program is the "give back" where youth apply the lessons learned in their weekly activities by serving as volunteer mentors to the 650 elementary school-aged SCORES youth in grades 3-5. Literacy in Action
America SCORES Chicago's Literacy in Action program combines service learning, creative writing, soccer and healthy living in a holistic approach to youth development, reaching 500+ underserved 3rd-8th graders on the city's west side. In the spring, students apply their literacy skills to identify and address a community need by designing and implementing a 10-12 week service-learning project. Students are given a platform to convert educational theory to concrete actions, cementing learned concepts, encouraging personal initiative, developing students' problem solving and leadership, and exercise a sense of social responsibility. Student Community Building
America SCORES Dallas is an afterschool soccer, poetry and service-learning program that enables disadvantaged urban youth between the ages of 8-12 to improve writing, speaking and reading skills, enhance physical fitness levels, and become engaged community leaders through team service projects. SCORES uses soccer to level cultural and social differences, build commitment, teamwork and leadership skills on the field. SCORES uses Poetry to advance creative expression and literacy. The spring program, called "Writing for the Community", combines the power of writing, with developed leadership, teamwork and commitment skills to embark on projects that make tangible community improvements. SCORES Dallas 2009 theme is "Cleaning Up Our Hood." Interpretation of this theme is left up to the students. The "cleaning up" could be visual, verbal, emotional, environmental. This is a positive and creative interpretation that encourages our youth to creatively design a community improvement project. Creating Committed Citizens: America SCORES Denver's Service & Writing Program
The 'Creating Committed Citizens' program takes place from March to June. Teachers lead their teams through the Writing For The Community (WFTC) curriculum. Students shape program activities by working together to choose an issue they want to improve in their community. Last year the teams investigated water pollution, held food drives for homeless shelters, worked in community gardens, and raised funds for refugees, among other varied projects. Throughout the spring students are thinking and writing about their community --they write poems, stories, and letters to City Council. The project purpose is to consistently reinforce students that they have the power to create change. America SCORES has a long history with Starbucks, both on the national and local levels. Break Away: The Alternative Spring Break Connection
Global Concerns and Refugee Resettlement
Break Away will run the 17th year of the Alternative Break Citizenship Schools (ABCs). The ABCs are based on the Citizenship Schools of the Civil Rights Movement - established to empower and educate citizens and communities for social action. These weeklong intensive and experiential trainings combine workshops, discussions, service, education, and reflection within an actual alternative break experience. Student leaders from colleges and universities across the country come to the ABCs each summer to start or strengthen their own campus alternative break programs while also volunteering in a community with a significant and compelling social issue. The issue focus will be Global Concerns and Refugee Resettlement. The ABCs will engage fifty student leaders in four hours of direct community service and five hours learning best practices in workshops. The students return to their own campus programs as trainers and organizers, collectively responsible for over 500 trips and 6,000 college students who will participate in alternative breaks during the spring of 2010. The Starbucks Foundation grant last year involved field marketing for in-store promotion that included a double tumbler use discount.
Alternative Spring Break Philadelphia
ASB Philadelphia is a project of Campus Philly, a nonprofit organization charged with enrolling, engaging, and employing regional college students in the Greater Philadelphia. Alternative Spring Break programs have been growing in popularity nationally and in the Philadelphia area. The students will be provided with full room and board for the duration of the program. Each day will consist of an on-site educational service project which will be hosted by one of the region's leading nonprofit organizations; these projects will provide students with an educational overview of an issue and then a hands-on project. At the conclusion of the day, students will be presented with dining excursions and cultural events which are unique to Philadelphia as part of the overall the overall experience, as well as chances to reflect on service experience with the group. ASB is program designed to help create the city's potential civic leaders by educating and inspiring the student population and encouraging them to stay in the area after graduation.
Chesapeake Bay Foundation
The Next Generation: Developing Environmental Leaders for Our Future
CBF has developed a comprehensive student leadership program. The objective is to create an army of student activists who will emerge as future community leaders and strong environmental stewards. For almost 30 years, CBF's Education Department has been offering unique and exciting field-based leadership development programs to young people throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. Each summer, CBF offers multiple one-and two-week field immersion trips, giving participating students an extensive opportunity to explore the Bay and its tributaries with scientists, naturalists, urban land planners, watermen and farmers. Each student participating in the program is required to design and conduct an authentic research project during the trip. The information collected then leads to an environmental action project in their home school and community designed to help protect the waterway under investigation.

City at Peace - New York empowers teenagers to create safe, peaceful, and productive lives and communities, and to develop the next generation of engaged community leaders in New York City. To that end, CP-NY participants are challenged with two objectives each year: 1) to create a full-length original musical theater production that they write, produce, and perform about their lives and their ideas for change; and 2) to learn from and participate in active community service and to undertake positive Community Action Projects that use the arts and media to create impact around issues of concern to them in their communities. Participants come from all five boroughs and from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, representing the full spectrum of the City's diversity in terms of ethnicity, geography, socio-economic status, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, education, and religion. CP-NY's approach to youth development through youth empowerment has a demonstrated impact and proven track record of success and artistic excellence. There has been a variety of partner involvement with City of Peace over several years.

Leadership Development Program
As part of City Year Chicago's (CYC) commitment to cultivating corps members' leadership skills and civic awareness, CYC has developed an integrated training program that teaches tutoring methods, community leadership, and introspective reflection. First, the Civic Leadership Competency Program is designed to frame and supplement the leadership skills and civic knowledge that corps members naturally develop throughout the course of the service year. The program develops six competency areas: Civic Knowledge, Community Understanding and Assessment, Team Leadership, Project Planning and Management, Working with Children & Youth, Public Speaking, Corps members increase civic competency in three primary ways: "Training Academies" held at the start and midpoint of the year; ten months of required weekly training sessions; and hands-on service and leadership experience. Second, the Idealist Journey uses two primary tools: a reflective workbook and Leadership Learning sessions.

This core value can be seen in City Year corps members, 17-24 year olds brought together for a year of demanding full-time service, and the Heroes Program, a developmentally appropriate service learning program for middle and high school-aged youth. Within the framework of developing their own leadership skills, corps members run the Heroes Program with the purpose of providing middle school and high school youth with 1) safe and enriching out-of-school activities, 2) the opportunity to build leadership skills, 3) the setting in which to create a feeling of belonging and common purpose, and 4) the chance to develop into civic leaders in their own right through service and learning.

College Mentors for Kids, Inc.
College Mentors for Kids' Service and Leadership Initiative
The College Mentors Service and Leadership program has three components--training events for 215+ chapter leaders, ongoing support of leaders and prepares college student volunteers to deliver efficient and excellent programming to at-risk children through the College Mentors for Kids program. The purpose of this project is to achieve the mission-related goals of 1) impacting disadvantaged populations and 2) developing future community leaders by encouraging service among college students. College Mentors for Kids is an after-school program serving 971 low-income 1st - 4th graders who lack exposure to higher education in their home life. These children may live near a college but have no idea what it is or how it can be a resource for them. In one year, children make 20 campus visits and spend 40 hours with their mentor, or role model. 1,100+ college students volunteer close to 100,000 hours annually to achieve goals of inspiring, educating and connecting youth to opportunities for the future.
Hit the Streets 2009: 23rd Avenue Bus Shelters
Every summer since 1982, Coyote Central has mounted a public art project in which local youth design and build a major piece of public art for their community. In July of 2009, 24 underserved youth will work with 3 professional artists to create designs in metal and painted wood for a pair of bus shelters in the 23rd Avenue corridor of the Central District. The imagery of the three shelters as perceived by both pedestrians and motorists will unify this stretch of 23rd and enhance its identity as a neighborhood.
Writing for the Community
The Writing for the Community program is12-week service-learning program for over 700 elementary and middle school students enrolled in DC SCORES. As part of Writing for the Community, the 30 students in 24 DC SCORES schools will take part in an organization-wide day of action, the DC SCORES Shout! in May 2009. Through the Writing for the Community program, DC SCORES students will: understand the issues and possibilities that exist in their communities, take part in service-learning project planning, discovery, action, and reflection, work with students, families, and neighborhoods all across DC through their school projects as well as during the Shout! Each year, DC SCORES provides an overarching theme to the 24 schools prior to beginning their WFTC projects. America SCORES has a long history with Starbucks, both on the national and local levels. Social Action Boot Camp
New York City, NY
Do Something's Social Action Boot Camps are a unique training and skill development program that provide youth leaders with the knowledge and tools they need to continue in their path as young social entrepreneurs. The program core is a full day of workshops and panels for a diverse group of roughly 125 young leaders, age 25 and under. The content is divided into three tracks: growth and sustainability, communications, and getting started. All workshops are lead by corporate and not-for-profit industry leaders who volunteer their time and expertise.
Girls Incorporated of Metropolitan Dallas
Approximately 300 nine to eleven year old girls from economically challenged neighborhoods, and women come together to celebrate their heritage as leaders influencing more than 1,500 girls and community members. They discover their own leadership skills through hands-on activities, role plays, community exploration, and a retreat. In addition, specially selected posters, books, games, CD-ROMs and other resources help create an environment of recognition and celebration of female leaders from many cultures, past and present. Together, Discovery Leadership partners explore and build upon their legacy to form their own ideas about what leadership means to them.
Youth Board: A Catalyst for Social Justice Entrepreneurs and Global Citizens
With this project, Global Visionaries (GV) will create the structure/curriculum to enable the Youth Board (YB) to: 1)teach the first year students, 2)empower and train YB to become leaders for social/environmental change outside of the GV community, 3)build the capacity of 2nd and 3rd year YB students to train incoming YB to be trainers. This will enable the program of the YB to become a self-sustaining and self-educating body. In the first three months, youth will identify focus areas and partners to plan community action, while staff will develop trainings and workshops. YB will use Theater of Liberation--a model by which participants create change in organizations and society by creating their own worldview. This project will directly serve 120 high school students from 15 high schools in the Seattle metro area. The Mercer Island store partners visited GV office to educate youth about ethical coffee sourcing, in 2006 supply drive in-store, in 2007 there was photo exhibit in-store, and there has also been several MYM projects.

Starbucks Philanthropy Committee (SPC)
Hands On Miami’s Youth Volunteer Corps(YVC)engages teens ages 13-17 in rewarding and meaningful direct-service and service-learning projects in Miami-Dade County. The YVC offers youth an average of 15 projects a month. The program provides 4 Projects On Demand(PODS)on a monthly-basis(youth-only customized service projects for groups, teams, and classes to serve together and address a community need they have a specific interest.)The YVC is counseled by the Youth Advisory Council (YAC), comprised of 15 youth representing different area high schools and middle schools. The YAC serves as a leader in the community by developing and leading these volunteer projects. The YAC equips participants with the tools, confidence, and resources needed to effectively address important community concerns, promote a life-long commitment to service, and increase their leadership skills. The local Starbucks in-store marketing manager is on the board and there has also been some Make Your Mark activities.

Through the Building A Bridge to Change project, Hands On will create and implement a sustainable infrastructure that identifies, trains and empowers youth leaders, engages large numbers of youth throughout the year with an emphasis on three major community volunteer events, cultivates lasting partnerships with local schools, provides an avenue for Starbucks partners to participate in the development of youth leadership and social responsibility, initiates an activity that can become self-sustaining and long-term, helps a wide range of nonprofit organizations incorporate youth into their volunteer programs on a regular basis, and inspires youth to a life long love of service.
Harrison Center for the Arts
Cultural Entrepreur Internship Initiative
Through its Cultural Entrepreneur Initiative, the Harrison Center would like to extend the success it has experienced in creating innovative solutions to cultural, economic, and neighborhood development challenges. This initiative is designed to shape its participants into cultural entrepreneurs--individuals who invest time and energy building culture in the city by creatively gathering partners into collaborative responses. They see a need, take the risk, and gather the resources necessary to make something happen. Developing the networking skills of these budding leaders (ages 12-20) will help them to leverage relationships for materials, labor, and creative approaches to problem solving. The HCA will rapidly advance the capacity of these participants by charging them with real responsibilities in staging events and programs, but also providing them with a framework and guidance that will ensure their success.
Jumpstart Bay Area

The purpose of Jumpstart's Bay Area programming is to engage youth in service to young children from low-income families, so that the young children are ready to succeed in school and the youth develop the skills to become future teachers and community and educational leaders. In 2008-2009, Jumpstart will engage 287 Bay Area Corps members to enhance the school readiness skills of 1,076 youth. While the children build their school readiness skills, Corps members also develop as citizens and as qualified practitioners of and advocates for early education. Jumpstart's Corps member evaluations demonstrate that Corps members increase their knowledge of best practices in early childhood education and become more involved and informed citizens. Boston: Recruiting and Training Jumpstart Corps Members Greater Boston
Jumpstart's three programmatic goals are to inspire adults to teach, children to learn, and communities to progress together. This project, by focusing on the first goal, will impact all Jumpstart foci. This project emphasizes development and training for Boston's college student Corps members from Boston University, Boston College Emerson College, Simmons College, Suffolk University, Tufts University, University of Massachusetts-Boston and Wheelock College. Using Jumpstart's proven curriculum, program model and site leadership structure, Jumpstart will cultivate college students to create a profound impact on children, preschools and communities while simultaneously developing leadership and civic engagement skills amongst the Corps members. By training 420 college students to deliver intensive services to preschool children, Jumpstart will impact the lives of nearly 1600 preschool children in Greater Boston. umpstart has a long history with Starbucks, both on the national and local levels. Jumpstart Philadelphia is committed to fostering a lifelong dedication of service in young adults and supporting the early learning of children in Philadelphia. Since 2004, Jumpstart Philadelphia has achieved great success in partnering with Temple University and local preschool centers to impact Philadelphia's most at-risk communities by recruiting and training young adults to deliver an innovative early literacy program via yearlong one-to-one relationships with preschool children. This project emphasizes development and training for Philadelphia's college student Corps members from Temple University. Using Jumpstart's proven curriculum, program model and site leadership structure, Jumpstart will cultivate college students to profoundly impact children, preschools and communities while simultaneously developing leadership and civic engagement skills in Corps members. By training 55 college students to deliver intensive services to preschool children, Jumpstart will impact the lives of over 230 preschool children in Philadelphia. Jumpstart Pittsburgh is committed to fostering a lifelong dedication of service in young adults and supporting the early learning of children in Pittsburgh. Since 1999, Jumpstart Pittsburgh has achieved great success in building strong university and community relationships, delivering high-quality training to Corps members to consistently provide effective literacy enrichment programming, and engaging additional volunteers in community service projects. This project emphasizes development and training for Pittsburgh's college student Corps members from The University of Pittsburgh. Using Jumpstart's proven curriculum, program model and site leadership structure, Jumpstart will cultivate college students to profoundly impact children, preschools and communities while simultaneously developing leadership and civic engagement skills in Corps members. By training 115 college students to deliver intensive services to preschool children, Jumpstart will impact the lives of 175 preschool children in Pittsburgh. The Fell Street Mosaic Project
San Francisco, CA
Kid Serve will work with over 100 teenagers ranging in age from 15-18 years old. Collaborations with principals, teachers and community organizations will enable students to create a series of mosaic murals on a 160' long retaining wall along Fell Street just one block from San Francisco's historic Alamo Square. Mosaic Muralist Josef Norris will partner with 3 teachers at Ida B. Wells High School and guide 4 classrooms over the course of the 2009/2010 school year through three 16-week mural projects, where students design and create three permanent outdoor mosaic murals in their community. These programs will take place in specifically chosen classrooms and will integrate history, social studies, and language arts curriculum. The projects culminate in the students creating a permanent outdoor mural in their communities.
Teen Korps Entrepreneur Program
Solana Beach, CA
The Teen Korps Entrepreneur Program is an educational outreach program that brings together teens (ages 13-18) of diverse social and ethnic backgrounds in service to their communities. The program is aimed at instilling in young people an awareness of the needs of others, the project planning and leadership skills to be able to design their own service projects, and the support to see the project through from conception to implementation. Through a comprehensive six-week training program, the teens develop leadership and project management skills, then "learn by doing" as project managers on team-based volunteer projects working with area nonprofit agencies to address those identified needs. Kids Korps received a California Grants for Giving contribution and some MYM activity.
National Museum of Mexican Art
Radio Arte's Media Training Program
Radio Arte, the youth community radio station of the National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA), is a Latino-owned, bilingual, youth-driven public radio station that works to advance the voices of the multi-layered society. Radio Arte does this by promoting socially conscious journalism, providing media-literacy training; and creating programming that showcases music, issues, and events not prominently featured in mainstream media. Through Radio Arte's MTP, young adults receive instruction in journalism basics and are taught to analyze a variety of social justice issues as well as gaining hands-on technical experience in radio production. Radio Arte's public programming is driven by young people that consider the airwaves to be a tool of empowerment for themselves and their communities. Radio Arte works to increase fair media access for immigrants, promote enriching dialogue, and reduce discrimination.
Undergrad California: Spreading Social Entrepreneurship on College Campuses
Various locations in California ($15,000) and various locations in the Northeast ($20,000)
Net Impact will educate and empower youth around social entrepreneurship related career paths. Specifically the program would include: 1) building the undergraduate student chapter network in California and 2) spreading the message of social entrepreneurship by launching a multi-faceted educational and engagement campaign called "Working for Good." Expansion of the undergraduate chapter network would involve identifying potential faculty and student champions, engaging these champions in the chapter launch process, and supporting their initial chapter building efforts. The "Working for Good" program will include three components, all intended to increase awareness of social entrepreneurship and socially responsible career paths: 1) the Social Entrepreneurship Challenge to encourage youth to develop innovative solutions to local social issues and recognize the most promising emerging youth leaders; 2) a social marketing campaign that educates youth on various socially responsible career paths; 3) a program that would place the most qualified undergraduates from each campus chapter in a summer job focused on social responsibility.
One World Now/Tides Center
Global Youth Leadership in Action
One World Now offer mostly low-income and minority high school youth from 8 public high schools in Seattle an after school program of language (Arabic & Chinese), leadership and study abroad experience. One World Now is one of the only programs in the nation that prepares students as global leaders by giving them the language, leadership and social entrepreneurial skills to succeed as global leaders. Furthermore, the organization provides transformational study abroad experiences and support to students in getting into college. One after school global leadership curriculum includes "social entrepreneurship" as one of the five main themes of the program (including personal leadership, social justice, intercultural communication and global citizenship). SSC partner is on the board and there has been some partner involvement.
Pillsbury United Communities
As part of the JumpStart program, youth will meet each week day for a minimum of four hours per day. They will plan, implement and evaluate an array of service and civic engagement projects such as painting murals, planting community gardens, mentoring younger youth and participating in intergenerational activities with seniors. Youth will plan, implement and evaluate a minimum of one large-scale summer service learning project. Semester of Service component: In October 2009, youth will begin planning service learning projects, engage in teambuilding activities and recruit new youth to the project. Service projects will begin on Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service (January 18, 2010) and end on Global Youth Service Day (GYSD)--the largest youth service event in the world--on April 22, 2010. Public Allies Chicago Apprenticeship & Team Service Project
The grant will support Team Service Projects which are led and implemented by the Allies themselves. The program is an effective pipeline for talented young people from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds to emerge as community leaders. We identify talented young adults who have a passion to make a difference and help them turn that passion into reality. The program consists of two areas: paid apprenticeships: Allies are placed at community-based nonprofits where they serve for ten months, working to increase the community-based organization’s capacity while gaining valuable job and life skills and leadership training: allies participate in weekly training sessions facilitated by community leaders and educators and receive individual coaching to gain the skills, abilities and values to be effective leaders.

Public Allies CT
Public Allies CT is a leadership development program that advances the skills, networks, and experiences of diverse young leaders as they strengthen communities, non-profits and civic participation. Allies (young adults between the ages of 18-30) commit to a rigorous and rewarding ten-month experience through paid apprenticeships in nonprofit community organizations, team service projects, and weekly leadership trainings.
Public Allies CT will be combining efforts to enhance the impact of their service ventures by partnering with University of Connecticut's (UConn) Global Training and Development Institute (GTDI). The partnership will allow interested allies to receive a certificate in Global Leaders in Social Entrepreneurship. The mission of GLTDI is to foster global sustainable development, citizenship, and cross-cultural understanding by providing individuals from around the world with transformational learning experiences.
Public Allies Miami
Neighborhood Leadership Program
Neighborhood Leadership Program (NLP) will organize four (4) Study Circles each comprised of 10-15 intergenerational residents, ages 16-50, in at-risk communities in Miami to meet and explore shared concerns and opportunities to develop an action plan for change in their community. They will receive leadership training to design an action plan for which Human Services Coalition will provide seed money for implementation. Each group is guided by a Public Ally, age 18-30, who is trained specifically in personal leadership, community organizing, civic engagement and project design & management.
Sierra Club’s Sierra Student Coalition
Various locations in California ($15,000) and various locations in the Northeast ($20,000)
The Sierra Club’s Sierra Student Coalition’s strategy is to build power where students and youth have a unique opportunity to effect change--in their schools and on their campuses--and to leverage that change into local, state and national work supporting clean energy. They do this through recruiting, training, and empowering youth at the high school and college level to run local campaigns targeted at clean energy and climate change. Through training and mentoring youth in the implementation of campaigns, the Sierra Club is building the next generation of not just the Sierra Club, but leaders for the entire environmental and social justice community. This project will train and empower students to achieve tangible social and environmental progress by organizing grassroots campaigns that develop the next generation of environmental leaders. It will do this by:
winning clean energy and climate victories on campuses to make their campuses models of sustainability in the fight for solutions to the climate crisis; training and empowering 4,500 high school and college-aged youth in grassroots organizing and leadership skills to organize for solutions to the climate crisis; catalyzing off-campus social action by supporting 20 networks of campus groups; supporting high school and college campaigns (61 directly and 250 indirectly) to make their campuses models of sustainability in the fight for solutions to the climate crisis; and increasing diversity within the Sierra Student Coalition.
SOLV Education Programs
SOLV's Education programs are intentionally designed to help students identify community environmental priorities and to work to address them within their school learning framework. Based on the teaching and learning strategy of "service-learning," these programs provide students with a "real-world" context for their education. Integrated school-based academic and career-related learning goals help students succeed in meeting state-set academic benchmarks and graduation requirements as well as civic and community engagement goals. There has been extensive MYM involvement with SOLV.
Street-Level Youth Media
Female Action Changing Voice
Through the Female Action Voicing Change (FAVC) program , Street-Level targets low-income, female media artists between the ages 14-19, who are interested in developing their leadership skills to take part in FAVC. Through an application process, Street-Level selects a small group of teen women for FAVC and trains them to become peer mentors to other youth learning media production. This year, Street-Level's FAVC peer mentors are working with young people from the organization Chicago Hopes--a social service agency and shelter for homeless youth. FAVC peer mentors will be conducting media production workshops for youth at Chicago Hopes shelters to teach them skills in video and audio production. Following the workshops, Street-Level instructors and the FAVC peer mentors will collaborate with the Chicago Hopes youth to produce media projects that address their concerns and tell their stories.
The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis
Power of Children Awards
The Power of Children Awards (POCA) is an annual program intended to honor and further empower middle and high school students (grades 6-11) across the state of Indiana who have made a significant impact on the lives of others, demonstrated selflessness and exhibited a commitment to service and the betterment of society. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis (TCM) seeks to nurture and recognize youth as role models who exemplify an extraordinary commitment to public service and social responsibility. The awards were inspired by the museum's dynamic permanent exhibition, The Power of Children: Making a Difference, which features three extraordinary children who touched the world in unique ways: Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges and Ryan White. Past POCA winners have included: a youth who produced his own radio show to serve the Hispanic community; a youth who used his savings to connect senior citizens to the Internet; and a youth who gathered supplies for troops in Afghanistan. There has been extensive sponsorship by the field marketing team in the past.
The Food Project
Social Entrepreneurs Fund
The Food Project's Internship Program inspires and empowers youth participants to develop leadership skills and thereby become agents for positive social change in their own communities. Through active participation in entrepreneurial ventures and social enterprise initiatives, these young people respond to pressing social needs, advancing The Food Project's vision of creating personal and social change through sustainable agriculture. There has been extensive MYM activity with The Food Project.
The Talented Youth
NFFTY Earth- A Campaign of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth
NFFTY Earth promotes the power of film to bring positive changes to the environment, support social justice, and encourage peace. NFFTY Earth is a project that helps young filmmakers find their voice and get their message out to as wide an audience as possible. NFFTY Earth films are shown at special screenings during NFFTY and at other year round events, with promotional and distribution campaigns in place to bring attention to both the filmmakers and their messages. The organization provides resources to young filmmakers by presenting earth friendly production standards, expanding industry and peer networking, organizing educational opportunities, and developing programs that encourage young people to become socially responsible filmmakers or take action on messages others communicate through film. The direct population served is young filmmakers 22 and under striving to use their talents to make a difference in the world. Over 300 young filmmakers, nationally and internationally, have been involved to date. There has been some MYM activity with the NIFFTY Earth program by local partners.
VeggieKids: A Unique Youth-Driven Program Providing Fresh Produce to the Needy
VeggieKids, a youth driven produce distribution program first ran in the summer of 2008, in North Central Philadelphia, where we ran children's programs at two community gardens. More than 900 pounds of produce was provided to 22 neighborhood families. In 2009, Urban Tree Connection intends to implement the VeggieKids program in West Philadelphia adding a health and nutrition curriculum that is accessible to children, teens and their families. The goal is to distribute produce to 20 families in West Philadelphia and 30 families in North Philadelphia. Teens will develop educational labeling to be distributed with the produce. Finally, children will engage in hands-on nutrition education as a part of the curriculum currently being used in the after-school programs. The young social entrepreneurs solve three pressing problems: the transformation of abandoned lots from open-air drug markets to urban farms; access to fresh produce where it does not exist in African American low-income neighborhoods; and health and nutrition education to fight obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes.

viBe core programming

viBe grant from the Starbucks Foundation will help fund four core programs: viBeStages, viBeSongMakers, viBeSolos and viBeApprentices. Each program provides under-served teenage girls with the opportunity to work collaboratively, express themselves through performance and reach out to their communities with their voices and ideas. viBe recruits teenage girls from the five boroughs of New York City. Most viBe Girls has had little prior access to arts activities or to all-girl groups. viBe's strives to build responsible, analytical young women by asking girls to define, analyze and create performances around the issues most important to them. Through art and performance, viBe insists that girls voice their own ideas for change.
YMCA of Greater Seattle
YMCA Earth Service Corps Youth Action for Community Solutions
The purpose of this project is to equip middle and high school teens with lifelong leadership skills, confidence and environmental stewardship ethics which encourage them to develop creative solutions to pressing environmental concerns in their schools and communities. YESC serves middle and high school youth throughout the nation with the highest concentration of active clubs in the western Washington.. YESC is proud to be one of few youth serving organizations with such a wide-reaching network of young environmental leaders. The program brings racially and socio-economically diverse teens together to learn about environmental issues, implement restoration projects and build collaborative relationships with their communities.
YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago
Wall of Independence Mural Project
The Wall of Independence Mural Project (hereafter called The Mural Project) is a service learning and arts education program for students age 12-21 that will empower young people to take a leadership role in beautifying and transforming their community through public art; train them in the arts, their own creativity, and the benefits of teamwork and group planning; educate them on aspects of their cultural heritage; introduce them to themes of social justice and social values; provide instruction in communication and public relations; and involve them in a high visibility civic celebration of the legacy of the 1.4 million Chicago-area residents of Mexican descent. The Mural Project will result in a very impressive permanent outdoor mural in the community that will long celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mexican Independence and the 100th anniversary of the Mexican Revolution. There has been some MYM involvement with the YMCA.

YMCA Youth Making A Difference Project
The YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas' Youth Making A Difference project will provide a continuum of civic engagement opportunities for young people, ages 11 to 14, as they; engage in monthly service-learning projects, team-up with other youth from varying socio-economic backgrounds and ethnicities as they serve side-by-side, participate in YMCA Youth And Government which prepares youth for responsible leadership in the democratic process. The expansion of the YMCA's Youth Making A Difference project intentionally brings together two very different groups of youth. By bringing together youth from different school districts, backgrounds, ethnicities and socio-economic levels, youth will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of and appreciation for people different from themselves.
Appendix B – Starbucks Shared Planet Youth Action Grants Summaries - Canada and Argentina Grant Summaries and list of markets with proposals under review
Each International region received an allocation of Youth Action Grants for which the markets could apply in collaboration with existing or new charitable organizations. We work closely with the Donor Advised Funds for due diligence and research, as well as partners in the regional support center who work with directly with the markets on identifying potential organizations. The grants will range from $10,000 to $25,000 and support youth to create change in their local communities.

Katimavik’s Volunteer Program fosters participants’ personal development through community involvement, training and group life. Young people (ages 17 to 21) live in groups of 11, in three different communities throughout the country. The teams work 35 hours a week on volunteer community projects in addition to participating in structured learning activities.
Strengthening the Youth for Health Network

Fundación Huésped is the largest Argentinean NGO in the struggle against AIDS, as a biological illness and also as a social disease that challenges the community to engage in capacity-building around raising awareness about Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), increasing its adoption of healthy behaviors and HIV/AIDS prevention strategies, as well as building a community-wide support system for those living with the disease.
Strengthening the Youth for Health Network (YHN) was founded in 2005 and encompasses more than 300 young people between the ages of 14-24 years from low-income neighborhoods in the greater Buenos Aires Area. Through the initiative “Culture and Health”, youth are trained as health multipliers, producing and disseminating health promotion and prevention messages to their peers through diverse artistic genres: theater, film, “murga” (youth group Carnivals), comics, puppets, photography, acrobatics, and balancing acts.
